The Association’s Women Affairs Department and Glocal Y co-organised the first “Friday Chat” online programme on 21 August, to discuss how the society stereotypes women about the role in the kitchen.
Barbara, a nutritionist, Bowie and Flora, volunteers from Glocal Y, discussed “Gender x Cookery x Healthy” in the programme. All guests agreed that women nowadays play different roles, and no longer see being a housewife as their life goal. One should be able to choose whether to cook depends on their needs and interests, but not because of responsibility. They mentioned a recent television show that emphasised only women who can cook are entitled to happy marriage, and criticised it as inappropriate and misleading. Through raising concern to the stereotype set by the media, it is hoped that the audiences will learn to break it.
Our guests also shared their cooking experiences and recipes. With little experience in cooking, Bowie participated in a 30-day vegetarian cooking challenge during the pandemic. She shared with us the happiness and satisfaction she got after being able to prepare novel and healthy dishes. Barbara introduced two simple recipes for healthy food, and reminded everyone to eat well both at home and dine out.
We will continue to host “Glocal Y Friday Chat” and discuss a variety of gender topics with different guests. Please follow Glocal Y’s social platforms for the latest news.
