HKYWCA’s volunteers visited rural needy in Xi’an, China
The Association held a tour to Xi’an, China for teenager volunteers to experience life in rural regions, provide voluntary teaching services for children and visit the needy. Volunteers were given a series of trainings about the recent developments of the rural villages and left-behind children in China before setting off. Our social workers also guided them to plan suitable volunteering services. Upon arrival, the volunteers were greeted by representatives of Xi’an YWCA and led to a primary school where they provided voluntary teaching services. They conducted paired reading to teach English, and mini games and DIY workshops to nurture good attitude and team spirit. Besides, volunteers brought joy to elderly and mentally handicapped persons with songs, games and simple exercise. Except providing services to the needy, the team also learnt about Xi’an’s culture, and visited attractions like the Terracotta Army and Da-Yan Pagoda. The architecture widened their horizon and they were extremely impressed by the wisdom of the ancient people. Since 2009, the Association has launched programme fostering services in China and provided training for youth who would like to volunteer in national education. Different kinds of activities have been organised to increase teenagers’ awareness on social issues in China.
