HKYWCA’s Women Affairs Department and Youth and Community Service Department co-organised the 6th Hong Kong Glocal Y Kick-off Ceremony, and announced the official start of the recruitment for the programme, which nurtures young women to concern themselves with different societal problems between genders.
A renowned artist, Ms. Catherine Chau shared her view on how women can response to social issues. In the face of injustice, she has faith in her own ability, and understands how important her effort and contribution are. She told the audiences not to be influenced by what others say and stay strong on their view. Besides, we conducted a competition to illustrate the relationship between gender issues and our daily life. Past participants of Glocal Y also shared their experiences and encouraged audiences to join the programme.
HKYWCA has emphasised the importance of woman empowerment, and hopes to raise public awareness on gender equality. In 2004, we founded a programme to nurture young women who were concerned with different societal problems and were willing to voice their opinions. Last year, we renamed the programme as Glocal Y, implying that we should “Think Global. Act Local”. Participants of this year programme will join a series of training and events, including workshop that discusses gender issues and leadership camp that helps to advance their communication and problem solving skills. While all young ladies will display their talents in a ceremony at the end of the programme, some of them might even have the opportunity to join exchange tour and broaden their horizon by taking part in the World YWCA Movement.
