3.8 YWCA Day – Showing the youth power

Carrying the theme “Showing the youth power”, this year’s “3.8 YWCA Day” aimed at raising public awareness on gender stereotypes and encouraging the society to let young people develop their strengths.

Ms. Chan Yuen Han, S.B.S., J.P., Chairperson of Women’s Commission mentioned her appreciation for HKYWCA’s work on women’s rights and contribution on developing women-oriented services. She wished that all sectors of the community would work together to ensure a fair environment, hence more opportunities, to all women and teenagers.

The Association invited Mrs. Tse Yau On Yee, the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Tse Sui Luen Jewellery (International) Ltd. and Chairman of Hong Kong Retail Management Association, and Ms. Chung Jah Ying, a member of Glocal Y as guests to share their outstanding life stories. Mrs. Tse is one of the few female CEOs in the Hong Kong business sector, and Ms. Chung works in the field of Information Technology, an industry in which the jobs are mostly taken up by men. Gender did not limit their career development and they hoped that young people would not disregard their dream because of gender stereotypes.

In order to encourage the public to pay more attention to gender equality, the Association released the survey findings gathered from an online questionnaire. Less than 50% of the interviewees agreed Hong Kong is a city with gender equality, revealing room for improvement. Also, a group of participants from IMPACT Uni, the Association’s leadership training programme, performed a drama to raise public awareness on the living condition and needs of grassroots women in order to advocate women’s right.
