In a smart city characterised by rapid technological advancement, how can we ensure that seniors are not left behind by the digital divide? It has always been a key focus for YWCA and its corporate partners. Between March and May this year, DBS Bank (Hong Kong) Volunteer Team collaborated with YWCA to launch a series of heartwarming community exploration and technology experience activities. Through the combination of gourmet food and technology, they successfully built a bridge for intergenerational harmony.

The activities commenced with heartfelt gifts. Young mothers from YWCA showcased their creativity by teaching DBS volunteers how to craft exquisite heart-shaped keychains using upcycled second-hand baby clothes. These handmade gifts, though small in size, carried immense emotional value. They not only put the concept of environmental sustainability into practice but also wove the blessings of the younger generation into every stitch. The volunteers personally presented these warm keychains to the seniors, allowing them to feel the care and warmth from different generations.

Following the workshops, volunteers accompanied the seniors to a variety of specialty restaurants in the community. From traditional Cantonese dim sum and authentic Taiwanese chain restaurants to sizzling teppanyaki, they led the seniors to experience dining cultures they rarely encounter in their daily lives. Many seniors remarked that their usual social circles are relatively small, and without the company of volunteers, they would seldom visit these trendy eateries. The vibrant atmosphere and exquisite meals added a touch of surprise and colour to their daily routines.

To help seniors integrate into a smart lifestyle, volunteers acted as "digital mentors" and guided the seniors on how to use their smartphones to scan QR codes and order food. This practical session not only solved the real-world difficulties seniors faced when dining out but also allowed them to experience the convenience of technology. During the meals, volunteers patiently troubleshoot smartphone-related problems for the seniors, including adjusting font sizes, sending voice messages, and sharing life moments on social media. The sight of seniors learning earnestly juxtaposed with the warm smiles of the volunteers, creating a truly beautiful scene.

The activities concluded successfully amidst warm laughter. Beyond enjoying delicious food and mastering new digital skills, the initiative connected young mothers, volunteers, and seniors through handmade gifts, demonstrating the profound significance of collaboration across sectors in promoting social inclusion.
