Dedicated to the holistic well-being of women, YWCA has launched a brand-new initiative “Project GenSHE”, designed to empower women to take care of their personal health. In mid-April, the project hosted its first medical seminar, featuring expert insights into common women’s diseases and introducing non-invasive screening technologies to encourage early prevention. 

Supported by Chiron Medical Group, the seminar addressing to an audience of 40 women from grassroots backgrounds was led by Dr. Frances Leung, Specialist in Emergency Medicine. Dr. Leung briefly introduced the complexities of human papillomavirus (HPV), its transmission, associated diseases and its direct link to cervical cancer. 

Dr. Leung pointed out that there are over 200 known types of HPV viruses, with an 80% lifetime risk of infection for most individuals, even if there is no signs of symptoms since virus can remain latent for extended periods, and is primarily transmitted through skin-to-skin sexual contact; according to research, one’s infection risk is approximately 60% even if there is only one sex partner. She also mentioned infection of high risk HPV viruses could cause cell mutations which brings cancer, for examples 90% of cervical cancer cases are caused by persistent HPV infections.

Dr. Leung emphasised that unlike many other cancers, cervical cancer is highly preventable through a dual approach of vaccination and regular screening. She advised women to undergo a Pap smear every three years or a HPV DNA test every five years to ensure early detection and intervention. 

Besides medical screening, non-invasive testing technology which uses urine sample to check for HPV viruses could be a more convenient and trouble-free way for women to consider. The seminar also introduced Phasify® Urine HPV Test, sponsored by Phase Scientific, to participants. The test could screen high-risk HPV virus, and come along with a medical-grade report within five working days, serving as a convenient first step for women to determine if further clinical examinations are necessary.

The seminar harvested enthusiastic responses which reflects community's need for accessible health education. “Project GenSHE” will continue its mission with an upcoming seminar scheduled for June, as to further promote “Invest in yourself by starting disease preventions".
