A heartwarming Family Fun Day helping SEN families rekindle mutual love
The COVID-19 pandemic is raging around the world, affecting the daily life of every Hong Kong citizen. Students have yet to return to their normal school life. For children with special educational needs (SEN), not only is their learning being obstructed, their rehabilitation training is also being hindered, which bring extra stress to their parents. To rekindle mutual love within the family members, the YWCA Jockey Club Family Wellness Centre has been providing multiple services to SEN families during the hard times. Recently, a Family Fun Day was held to create meaningful time for parents and children, and to build a community support network to alleviate participants’ parenting pressure.
Thanks to the Hong Kong Jockey Club’s sponsorship, the centre launched a learning support programme at the beginning of the year to assist SEN families in need. A Family Fun Day was organised in May with the help of the Jockey Club CARE Volunteer Team. 74 families were divided into 4 groups to enjoy a pleasant day by taking part in various workshops, e.g. Chinese drums playing, balloons twisting, etc. There was also a heartwarming flower giving session on that day.
In addition to the fun day, there are other measures that help underprivileged SEN children and their families adapt to the "new normal" arose from the pandemic, including one-on-one learning support, emotion management training, mindfulness activities that strengthen parent-child relationship, etc. Learning materials have also been distributed to families in need when classes resume.
The Association is grateful to the Hong Kong Jockey Club for paying attention to the developmental needs of SEN students under the pandemic. We look forward to more cooperation opportunities in the future to provide appropriate services to students and cultivate the next generation.
