People had to stay at home during Christmas because of the COVID-19 pandemic. To bring joy to the community, YWCA Y Eco Tour Tai O Cultural and Ecological Integrated Resource Centre launched online day tours during the festive occasion and led people who love to travel to explore Tai O through the online application Zoom.
Being the most long-standing fishing village, Tai O has preserved many of its qualities and is a popular destination of local tours. Participants of our virtual tour had a chance to walk around the characteristic stilt house, which rarely admits visitors, and learnt more about its structure, history and the life of the people, through the conversation between the guide and the resident.
The guides also toured around Kat Hing Street and Shek Tsai Po Street, Tai O Heritage Hotel, shrimp sauce factory, Hong Kong Shaolin Wushu Culture Centre, former theatre etc., to show participants the history and culture of the fishing village. Another good way to experience culture is to take a peek at its cuisine. Therefore, we showed how the natives prepare salted eggs yolks, shrimp sauce and Cha Guo, and also introduced special street foods in Tai O to satisfy food lovers.
This festive series was our first attempt to hold virtual tours. We will organise similar events in late Jan, introducing more attractions and stories of Tai O. Please visit Y Eco Tour’s Facebook Page or contact us at 2985 6310 for more details.
