Multi-sensory teaching material helps young children learn Chinese
When compared to English alphabets, the use of logograms makes Chinese more difficult to comprehend. To help young children overcome the fear of learning Chinese, YWCA Y SENse team develops a set of multi-sensory teaching material, which enable learners to master the Chinese characters through touch, decoding and practice.
Following the guidelines provided by the Education Bureau, the teaching material incorporates 120 commonly-used lexical items for Primary One to Primary Three Chinese learners. Young children can easily comprehend the structure and stroke order of the characters with the tactile feature of the word cards, and then practise writing on the transparent film that employs the "12 decoding methods". While coloured word cards provide hints matching different parts of the characters, monochrome cards target children who can master the decoding technique.
