“Railway 101” was jointly organised by MTR Academy and the Hong Kong Island Elder Academies Cluster, operated by YWCA. 40 elder participants acquired basic knowledge of the railways and enhanced their safety awareness when riding on the MTR. They became "Caring Ambassadors" at the end of the programme and promoted safe and smart mobility.

“Railway 101” covered diversified contents, from basic railway knowledge, future development and environment-related policies, to the usage of "MTR‧Care" app, which provides accurate travelling options, information on barrier-free facilities etc. The both academic and practical curriculum brought great convenience to the participants’ daily life.

Participants were able to join interesting tours too. They visited Tuen Mun Light Rail Depot, Chai Wan Depot and the control room in Shau Kei Wan Station, to learn more about railway operation, station facilities, inspection and maintenance processes, etc. They also had the precious opportunity to be a "train captain" in the cab simulator and experience operating a train. At the end of the programme, the trainees acted as ambassadors and helped promote escalator safety to passengers in the station. 

Thanks to the support of MTR Academy and the cordial reception by MTR volunteers, the elderly were able to understand the local transportation network in an engaging way. It also helped promote active ageing and allowed elders to enjoy safer and smarter mobility by putting what they learnt into practice.
