YWCA has started operating Jockey Club Carer Space in Tsing Yi, Sheung Shui and Sai Wan Ho respectively since March this year. They adopt a carer-centric approach to provide appropriate services to carers. Professor Patrick Nip, Convenor of the Advisory Committee of the Jockey Club Carer Space Project, accompanied by Ms. Yvonne Yeung, Chief Executive of YWCA and Mr. Kenneth Chow, Service Director (Aged Care & Community Health Service), visited the Carer Space in Sai Wan Ho earlier and tried out the 5-Sense Box which provides multi-sensory cognitive stimulation training for elderly. In addition, they gained more understanding of the daily support services and various wellness activities designed for carers.

The Carer Space provides a wide range of wellness activities for carers, including expressive art workshops, stress-relieving handcraft classes, nursing seminars, relaxing tearoom etc. The activities allow carers to acquire new knowledge while taking a rest. The design of the Carer Space aims to provide therapeutic environment. The simple and soft colour tone, and a large number of green plants, create a relaxing vibe and make the service users feel as if they are in the nature. 

The Carer Space also provides daily support services for carers, including the “flexible respite service”, which allows carers to handle their personal matters while the elderly can be taken good care of. Unlike ordinary day care centre, the Carer Space will arrange activities such as five senses and cognitive training for the elderly, to enhance their sensory abilities.

The three Jockey Club Carer Spaces will leverage YWCA elderly services in the community and create synergy to provide timely and appropriate services for the carers. Each centre is expected to serve at least 800 carers and elderly every year.
