Three of the Association’s “Opportunities for the Elderly Projects” received District Best Activity Award
The Social Welfare Department organised an online award ceremony for “Opportunities for the Elderly Project”. The Association received 3 District Best Activity Awards, recognising our effort on promoting intergenerational harmony and caring for the elderly.
Programme: Beauty & The Best
Award: 2019-20 “Opportunities for the Elderly Project” 1-Year Project - District Best Activity Award (Tsuen Wan and Kwai Tsing District)
Organised by Cheung Ching Neighbourhood Elderly Centre, the programme emphasised that life is full of possibilities, even for elderly. A variety of art, sports and horticulture activities, e.g. pastel painting, pot planting, Thai boxing, make-up and photo taking, were organised to encourage elders to expand their social network and connect with the community. Over 900 people joined the activities. After taking part in the programme, participants did not only meet new friends, but also understood the meaning of lifelong learning and were more willing to try new things. The programme succeeded in building an age-friendly community.
Programme: Sweetie Connect in the Neighbourhood
Award: 2019-20 “Opportunities for the Elderly Project” 1-Year Project - District Best Activity Award (Kowloon City and Yau Tsim Mong District)
Initiated by Kowloon City Integrated Home Care Services Team, the project brought elderly, children, teenagers, and corporate volunteers together to build a neighbourhood. Events like making traditional snacks, planting pots, local trips, carnival etc. attracted more than 700 participants. Frail elderly who seldom went out had the opportunity to communicate with youngsters in the programme. They learnt from the younger generation, meanwhile shared their knowledge to demonstrate their worthy experiences, which helped young people to appreciate their elder family members. Besides, the elderly helped with the execution of the events by making good use of their talents.
Programme: Dementia Awareness Programme
Award: 2018-20 “Opportunities for the Elderly Project” 2-Year Project - District Best Activity Award (Eastern District and Wan Chai District)
Formulated by Ming Yue District Elderly Community Centre, the 2-year programme aimed at supporting dementia patients and their family members by creating a supportive and friendly community. 103 secondary school students and elderly volunteers from Eastern and Wan Chai district joined together to work on video about dementia. Harmony between the young and the old was promoted in the process. Public education was further carried out by setting up street counters, paying visits to stores and organising workshop for families in the district. Over 30 events engaged 5,293 participants in the last 2 years. Citizens became aware of dementia and its symptoms after joining the programme, which enabled them to detect unusual behaviours of the older members in the community.
