As the Lunar New Year approaches, YWCA Ming Yue District Elderly Community Centre, in collaboration with the Eastern and Wan Chai District Social Welfare Office of Social Welfare Department, and the Sun Hung Kai Properties (SHKP) Volunteer Team, launched the “SHKP Building Homes with Heart” Caring Initiative. The programme aimed to convey care to grassroots and elderly singletons, while strengthening the spirit of mutual support within the community.

A volunteer team comprising more than 70 SHKP staff and YWCA elderly members delivered 150 goodie bags, donated by SHKP, to elderly residents in the Eastern and Wan Chai districts. The team visited 64 households, bringing warmth and joy to 83 elderly individuals. Each goodie bag was thoughtfully prepared, containing daily necessities, nutritious food, and handmade scarves and beanies knitted by volunteers. Beyond material support, the volunteers brought companionship and a sense of vitality to the elderly.

Many elderly eagerly awaited the volunteers at their doorsteps and shared life stories and old photographs. In one heartwarming encounter, an elderly was delighted to recognize a former colleague among the volunteers - a reunion felt like a serendipitous gift, leaving everyone deeply moved.

The youngest volunteer, only four years old, embodied the spirit of inclusion and intergenerational harmony. One parent remarked that the activity offered children a valuable opportunity to engage directly with elderly and grassroots families, helping them better understand community needs while nurturing social responsibility and compassion.

Ms. Siu Kin-heung, Mabel, District Social Welfare Officer (Eastern and Wan Chai) of the SWD, attended the event to show her support. She highlighted the significance of this tripartite collaboration between the corporate sector, social welfare organisation, and volunteers. The Association extends sincere gratitude to both the SWD and SHKP, firmly believing that through such collaboration, the seeds of care can be sown across every corner of the community.
