In the Labour Department’s “YETP Most Improved Trainees Award” 2025, three YWCA trainees were honoured for their remarkable journeys. Chan Hei-laam (Theresa) was named one of the Most Improved Trainees, while Wong Ka-keung and Chau Chi-wing (Henry) received the Merit Award. Their diverse paths - from entrepreneurial motherhood to photography and aquaculture – showed how young people can transcend societal expectations and create inspiring lives. 

Theresa: A young working mom carving her own path 

“Bringing my kid to work used to be my biggest worry,” shared Theresa, a young mother who found support through YWCA. With the Association’s flexible employment policy, she was able to bring her son to the office, and even turned her parenting experience into a professional strength. Beyond balancing childcare and work, Theresa cultivated confidence, responsibility and creativity.  She also equipped herself to develop a part-time handicraft business. Her story proves that young mothers can shine brightly when given the right platform.  

Ka-keung: Confidence framed through a lens 

Once a shy shutterbug who avoided social interactions, Ka-keung found a breakthrough through YWCA’s training programme. He transformed his passion for photography into a profession, progressing from event photography to curation. He also improved his interpersonal skills after communication skills workshops. As he honed his craft, Ka-keung found fulfillment and enthusiasm in his work, actively exploring new career possibilities and redefining his future. 

Henry: Transformation by the fishpond  

Carrying the labels of ASD and SEN, Henry once struggled with confidence. He overcame communication barriers and gradually strengthened his abilities through training. With opportunities provided by his employer, he stepped into the fish farm and became a part-time marine aquaculture production assistant. Henry unlocked his potential across different roles, evolving from self-doubt to hopefulness. The shift in mindset revitalised both his work performance and interpersonal relationships, charting a new trajectory for his life.  

The awards brought the three trainees not only confidence, but also encouragement and motivation along their journeys. Theresa’s integration of roles, Ka-keung’s passion-driven growth, and Henry’s strengthening of skills exemplify how youth employment support extends beyond skill-building to holistic life planning.
