With supported from Lee Kum Kee Family Foundation, YWCA Jockey Club Family Wellness Centre launched the “Transitioning to Secondary School Agent 1.0” programme to assist Primary 6 students and their families navigate the transition to secondary school. The programme’s highlight “Transitioning to Secondary School: Karting Experience” was successfully held at The Mills on Sep 13-14, attracting over 800 participants, including Primary 5 to Secondary 1 students and their parents, as well as community members concerned about the needs of students transitioning to secondary school. The event featured innovative tracks that incorporated themes of secondary school adaptation. Through five interactive experience zones and parallel expert-led seminars, the event aimed to ease student stress, prepare them for placement exams, and support Secondary 1 newcomers in adjusting to the new environment.

The activities in the thematic interactive zones were rich and engaging. The journey started with the starting light in the first zone. The “Primary Six Interview Secrets” experience zone featured mock interviews with real-time feedback from professional instructors, offering practical tips for interview success. The “Summer Mobile Classroom” introduced students to Secondary 1 subjects, sparking curiosity and boosting motivation. The “Learning and Stress Relief Solutions” area, designed for new Secondary 1 students, provided advice on time management and memory enhancement, along with various stress relief techniques. The "Add Oil" zone prepared some recorded sharing of students for participants to listen, followed by writing encourage feedbacks.  Each zone was equipped with speedometers and sound effects to vividly illustrate the stress levels students face during different stages from Primary 6 to Secondary 1, resonating deeply with them. Participants could also redeem limited-edition capsule toys with stamps collected upon completion of tasks. The cute design was especially popular among students.

The “Transition to Secondary School Strategy” handbook distributed on-site covered interview preparation, subject overviews, stress management strategies, and tips for effective parent-child communication. Five thematic seminars focused on the role of parents, with insights shared by secondary school principals, educational psychologist and social workers. Topics included recognising signs of stress in children, identifying key factors for successful interviews, and coping with secondary school life. Among them, Principal Kwok Sai Man, Simon, of YWCA Hioe Tjo Yoeng College discussed “How to Stand Out in an Interview”, which drew a full house. Speaking from both the students’ and parents’ perspectives, he shared in detail four common types of interview questions, key answering strategies, and effective response techniques. He generously revealed the school's interview scoring criteria and even demonstrated how to express personal views during an interview to leave a good impression on teachers. One parent commented, “The seminar was excellent - clear, insightful and thoroughly explained!”

The transition from Primary 6 to Secondary 1 is like a fiercely competitive karting race, and parents are increasingly eager for information to help their children adapt. The Association encourages families to let go of comparisons and instead find a pace that suits their child’s unique development – focusing on holistic physical and mental well-being. Ms. Esther Chan, Head of Lee Kum Kee Family Foundation, and Mr. Yeung Tsz Ting, Fund Manager of the Foundation deeply appreciated the vision behind the exhibition. After engaging in the activities and with the volunteers, they affirmed that the content was practical and beneficial for both students and parents. Building on the success of this immersive event, YWCA will continue to offer structured and comprehensive support on secondary school transition. Over the next two years, the "Transitioning to Secondary School Agent 2.0" programme will roll out, featuring more creative educational activities to realise our commitment to holistic development.
