Disgusting Hair Joins The YWCA Award-Winning Emotion Education Picture Book Series
Hong Kong Young Women's Christian Association (YWCA) has always prioritised the developmental needs of children, and emotion education plays an essential part.
In this year’s Hong Kong Book Fair, YWCA introduces the third picture book of its Emotion Education series, titled Disgusting Hair. This book provides a simple and comprehensive introduction on children's emotion of “disgust”, with discussion topics and parenting tips for better parent-child communication and relationship.
Disgusting Hair tells the story of Willow, who stubbornly refused to have his hair brushed and disregarded others' opinions. However, he eventually overcame this aversion and picked up the comb. What are the reasons behind the change? Parents, teachers and social workers are welcome to order the book from YWCA online gift store, or purchase it at Sun Ya Publications booth during the Book Fair.
In response to children’s needs for better emotion management during the pandemic, YWCA started the publishing project of the Emotional Education picture book series in 2021. These books, based on the theory of Emotion Coaching, illustrate how children express negative emotions, and ways of alleviation. The stories are written bilingually, favouring both Chinese-speaking and non-Chinese-speaking families.
In the past two years, YWCA has published Angry Croissant and Crying Leaf to introduce the emotions of anger and sadness, respectively. Among them, Crying Leaf was honoured at the 4th Hong Kong Publishing Biennial Awards 2023, receiving a bold recognition from the academic and publishing communities.
