Joan Hon (right), YWCA Chief Officer (Elderly Service), believed that 5-sense training camp can enhance the relationship between the elderly and the caregivers. Dr. Gloria Wong, Associate Professor of Department of Social Work and Social Administration, HKU, mentioned that around 45% of the COVID death cases are Alzheimer’s Disease patients. More interaction with the nature might be what patients and caregivers need most now.
Elderly suffering from Alzheimer’s Disease and their caregivers enjoyed the nature under the guidance of the Forest Therapy instructor.
Patients and caregivers learnt to knead the dough and bake pizzas with the earth oven.

The 5-sense training camp will be held in YWCA’s Sydney Leong Holiday Lodge, which situates at San Shek Wan, Lantau Island, and is surrounded by the nature.

World Alzheimer's Day takes place every year on 21 September. In August, YWCA conducted interviews with 425 Alzheimer’s Disease patients’ caregivers to explore relationship between nature activities, elderly health conditions, and stress level. To enhance the living standard of and ease the tension between patients and their caregivers, the Association’s Sydney Leong Holiday Lodge will organise 5-sense training day camps starting from October, 2021. First-of-its-kind in Hong Kong, the camps employ advices from occupational therapists and utilise the environment in the camp site to design activities for the participants.
