The second Sichuan cultural exchange and service learning tour, organised by The Y.W.C.A. Hioe Tjo Yoeng College, recently concluded with great success. The 7-day learning journey not only provided students with valuable service-learning opportunities but also deepened their understanding of cultural preservation, educational services, and the profound meaning of life.

During the tour, students volunteered at the giant panda base to prepare food and clean the habitat. From spliting bamboo, trimming leaves to making “wowotou” (steamed corn buns), students experienced the professionalism and patience required in conservation work. The unique experience allowed them to gain a deeper appreciation for biodiversity and the vital importance of ecological preservation.

A core highlight of the tour was the volunteer teaching service at Xian’e Primary School in Zitong County. The students held English classes for local children, using interactive teaching materials designed by themselves. From the progress made by local students, our “teachers” witnessed the thirst for knowledge. Furthermore, they collaborated in STEM classes and held the “Xian Yue Cup” paper airplane competition, fostering innovation and teamwork through hands-on practice.

Beyond community service, the group explored Sichuan’s cultural heritage, visiting Guanxian Ancient City, Zhongshuge Bookstore, Zhuangyuan Di, Jinli Ancient Street, and Dongjiao Memory. A particularly moving experience was the visit to the 5.12 Wenchuan Earthquake Yingxiu Epicenter Memorial Hall and the ruins of Xuankou Middle School. Students spontaneously stood in solemn silence and held a floral tribute. They gained a profound understanding of life’s impermanence and the immense power of human love and unity during post-disaster reconstruction.

Participants commented that the journey was immensely rewarding. Chun Wai-yin (F.3) was glad to witness the children’s transformation : “Seeing them evolve from timid to lively allowed me to discover my own patience and responsibility as a 'little teacher.' Their smiles and progress made our mission truly meaningful.”

Li Kit-shing (F.4) was touched by the warmth of local families and the independence of the children during home visits. Through the STEM paper airplane activity, he encouraged the local students to bravely pursue their dreams, noting: “Growth is not just about acquiring knowledge; it is about learning independence, gratitude, and courage”.

The Sichuan cultural exchange and service learning tour not only broadened students' horizons but also ignited a deep sense of responsibility for cultural preservation and educational service. Carrying with them growth and inspiration, the teachers and students look forward to continuing their commitment to exchange and service in the future, turning their learning into action and contributing to society.
