Toolkit made by multi-professional team helps children prepare for challenges at primary school
Larger school premise, longer school hours, more extensive curriculum, stricter school rules etc. are all changes young children have to get used to when they leave kindergarten for primary school. The problem of adaptation will appear if they fail to adjust their mindset. Therefore, HKYWCA Y SENse team co-works with toy developer K's Kids to design a toolkit that helps children move on to primary school life.
The toolkit is designed by the Association’s social workers, occupational therapists and speech therapists, together with professional toy designers. Through different props, the kit improves children's cognition, self-care techniques, social development and fine motor skills needed for primary school.
With two storybooks, a user manual for parents, and models of school bag, student handbook and primary school desk, the toolkit visualises the experience of attending primary school through games, and hence alleviate children’s fear of the unknown. Kids can learn to take care of themselves, for example, pack schoolbag and make to-do lists, with the help of the props. The toolkit is now available on Y SENse online shop at HK$299.
Because of the pandemic, class has been suspended since late January, and "learning at home" has become extremely important. To help parents and the young children to adapt to the upcoming changes, our social work team has filmed a teaching video to illustrate the usage of the toolkit alongside positive discipline.
