Housing Society Academy Alumni Club made Life Storybooks for elders in Chun Seen Mei Chuen
The Housing Society’s rental estate Chun Seen Mei Chuen, located in Kowloon City, will undergo redevelopment soon. Prior to that, the Housing Society Academy Alumni Club collaborated with the Association to create Life Storybooks for several elderly residents in the estate as a memoir of their good old days.
The volunteers of the HS Academy Alumni Club learned techniques of creating the Life Storybooks and skills to communicate with the elderly through a workshop conducted by the Association. They were then guided to visit the elderly residents, who have been living in the estate for several decades, for the first time. In the following six weeks of time, the volunteers took their free time during weekends or at night to visit the elderly whereby they developed friendly relationship with each other. The elderly often shared their bitter-sweet old stories with the volunteers while flipping through photo albums.
Through these home visits, the volunteers collected stories and photos of the elderly to compose unique Life Storybooks for each of them. The Life Storybooks does not only contain reminiscences about the elderly, but also design elements and handicrafts that relate to their past or their interests. During the pre-Christmas tea gathering, the volunteers presented the Life Storybooks to the elderly and read them through together. The elderly were deeply impressed by the heart-warming books which they will treasure for life.
The Association would like to thank the Housing Society and the HS Academy Alumni Club for organising this service programme. It does not only create life-long memories for the elderly residents, but also gives an exceptional opportunity for the elderly and young volunteers to understand and appreciate each other in harmony.
