Support the picture book charity sale and help SEN children!
HKYWCA is now having a charity sale to raise funds for children with special educational needs (SEN) and their parents, with Y-SENse’s new picture book “Please give me more time”. The book is based on true stories and illustrates how an autistic child adapts to primary school life. It provides a great reference for the families and schools facing similar situation.
The picture book is designed by Bowie Choi, an illustrator with knowledge on child psychology, and Leo Chan, a famous visual & graphic designer. They tailor the book for autistic children who tend to have strong sense of touch and sight. For example, the picture book utilises papers commonly used in kindergarten and primary school textbooks to tell even the texture of the paper brings challenge to autistic children. Characters are designed to have bigger head so that facial expression and emotion can be easily comprehended. Contrasting colours are used to arouse pupils’ interest in reading. Interactive elements are also added to facilitate the understanding of each character’s mind.
We encourage parent-child co-reading so that parents understand everyone needs time to get used to a new environment. They are also encouraged to help their children to enjoy the changing surroundings by using the “visual card”, “reward card” and “emotion stickers” in the book.
The picture book costs HK$200 each and the net revenue will go to the self-financed Y-SENse services to support children with SEN and their parents.
