Sponsored by the Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust, a three-year project named “Jockey Club YouthCreate Series” has been implemented. HKYWCA Tuen Mun Integrated Social Service Centre and Butterfly Bay Integrated Social Service Centre was invited to organise the “Maker Education Programme”.
The Centre set up a maker lab and purchased new facilities and equipment for wood work, electronics and paper modelling, and 3D printing. Coupled with a co-learning and empowering approach through design thinking with the guidance of our social workers, it courage youths to be more innovative in solving social problems and facilitate them to be changemakers in the community. Maker activities include professional skills training, exploration events, exchange opportunities, overseas tours and social services. Those activities did not only help participants to improve their creativity and gather latest information, but also linked up their innovative proposal and community needs by increasing awareness on social problems, building a more comfortable living environment.
Besides, the Association held a “Maker Education” carnival in Tuen Mun, aiming to promote the concept of “Maker”. We showcased different makers’ products, including self-made wooden seesaw, Reversi, a toy bus and etc. Also, the youth makers arranged workshops like handmade eco-toy, wood work trial class for the participants to let them taste the enjoyment of a maker.
