Dr. Law Chi Kwong, Secretary for Labour and Welfare toured in North District to visit different elderly facilities, including the Association’s centres.
Accompanied by Mr. Chong Wing Wun, JP, District Officer of North District Office, Ms. Sophia Hui, Assistant District Officer(2) of North District Office, Mr. So Sai Chi, SBS, MH, Chairman of North District Council, and Ms. Shirley Fong, Senior Liaison Officer(2) of North District Council, Dr. Law visited the Association’s Ellen Li District Elderly Community Centre. The staff introduced projects on “Age-friendly City” to the guests, e.g. “Alliance for Age-friendly Community in North District” and “WHO Global Network of Age-friendly Cities and Communities”. The elders were trained to be an ambassador to make the living environment better for the seniors. They conducted inspection in different districts and reported community issues of North District to the Government, e.g. the location of traffic lights, tree pruning etc.
We also showed the guests how we applied gerontechnology to encourage the elders to build self-management habits and gain a better understanding of their own health. Elders acted as volunteers to introduce the “eHealth Care Project” platform and other electronic fitness facilities to Dr. Law, whom was invited to try the equipment.
After the tour in Ellen Li District Elderly Community Centre, Dr. Law and guests went to Y Farm of Healthy Ageing. The farm is operated by retired elders to advocate active ageing. Apart from daily farming activities, the elders help to organise events and tours for the public to learn farming skills.
