Parents play an important role in a child’s healthy growth. However, the stress of balancing work, life and children’s needs can be overwhelming. Extreme stress may result in mood disorders if it is not being taken good care of. Clinical experience also showed that the number of parents suffering from mood disorders is growing. To deal with the situation, the Association has launched the “Love Without Fear” Parent Education Programme, which aims to enhance parents’ emotion regulation and parenting skills.
Supported by Yan Mei (Miss Asia) Charity Organization, HKYWCA Jockey Club Tin Shui Wai Family Wellness Centre’s “Love Without Fear” Programme is for parents suffering from mood disorders, e.g. depression, anxiety, etc. and their children aged between 0 and 6. The programme is family-based, with cognitive therapy and counseling sessions easing parents’ pressure and stress, and parent-child sessions and multi-sensory learning group for children allowing parents to learn parenting skills and strengthen parent-child relationship.
Community education is also important. The programme helps vulnerable families to build support networks and maps out regular meetings with volunteers. Timely interventions will then be possible in a caring community that encourages mutual assistance.
