In order to let children have a closer look at different animals so as to raise their curiosity towards the nature, AXA Hong Kong has organised Ocean Park - Behind the Scene Tour for a group of primary students. The Tour has successfully increased participants’ awareness on environmental conservation.
Nearly 20 students joined the Tour at Ocean Park together with the volunteers from AXA Hong Kong. The participants were not joining any amusement rides, but just focusing on understanding the animals’ habitats. Students entered the backstage of the Amazing Asian Animals and the Grand Aquarium, meeting the animals in a short distance.
At the Grand Aquarium, participants understood how the Ocean Park staff transfer the fishes from backstage to the aquarium, and what the fishes eat. They also met the sea turtle that was receiving treatment in the Park. Later, they were introduced by the Park staff the pandas’ toys, their food and favourite snacks - biscuits. Children got the chance to have a piece of biscuit on hand and smell it.
The exciting day ended with a talk held by Ocean Park Conservation Foundation (OPCF). OPCF staff introduced three endangered species to the participants, including the Chinese white dolphin, horseshoe crab and seahorse. By knowing the reasons contributing to their extinction, children understood the types of human behaviours that would cause damage to the marine ecosystem, e.g. using plastic bag.
