Shui On Seagull Club raised funds for the Food Stamps Programme
Shui On Seagull Club organised the “Famine Lunch” to raise fund for HKYWCA Chi Po Neighbourhood Elderly Centre. SOCAM Development Limited and its volunteers took active part in the event and eventually, raised HKD75,000 for the Food Stamps Programme for grassroots families and elderly. After “Shui On 6-Hour Famine” last year, the “Famine Lunch” was another event that raised funds for people living in subdivided units or in other needs by mobilising volunteers to experience a “famine”. With the HKD75,000 raised, the Food Stamps Programme can provide 90 families with HKD250 food stamps per month for 3 months, in additional to a free meal every week. Ms. Chan is one of the beneficiaries of the Food Stamps Programme. Unfortunately with steoporosis, she rents a unit with lift as she has difficulties in going up and down stairs. Even with the subsidy from the Social Welfare Department, Ms. Chan has to pay HKD2,000 as the monthly rental of the unit is way over HKD3,000. “I try to save every penny from meals and the Food Stamp Programme helps a lot. And going to the canteen once in a while let me have a taste of having meals with my family like what I did in the past,” said Ms. Chan. Shui On Seagull Club and Chi Po Neighbourhood Elderly Centre also applied for the Partnership Fund for the Disadvantaged. Volunteers from Shui On organised events regularly for elders living alone in the neighbourhood, to widen their social circle. 41 elders enjoy a karaoke gathering with delicious dishes last month. Many of them were excited as karaoke was a brand new experience for them.
