Understand the elder sector through Golden Age Expo cum Summit
Ms. Yvonne Yeung, the Association’s Chief Executive was invited to be the facilitator for one of the symposia in the Golden Age Summit, organised by Golden Age Foundation on January 30 and 31. Ms. Yeung and two guest speakers discussed the importance of household design that keeps elders safe at home. HKYWCA also set a booth in the Golden Age Expo to introduce its social enterprises on elder services. As one grows old, more and more problems arise in daily life and accidents happen easily to elders even in one’s familiar places. An elder friendly living environment is hence important to prevent elderly from getting hurt at home. A symposium on “Smart Design & Build” was held during the Golden Age Summit. Ms. Yeung was the facilitator and discussed household design with the two guests, Ms. Selina Lo, Senior Manager Elderly Services of Hong Kong Housing Society, and Dr. Calvin Luk, Consultant Architect of Rehabaid Society. Other than Y Silver Link, which provides sale of household and daily living products for elders and supports the setup of elder friendly living environment, a lot of social enterprises of the Association targeting the golden age population were showcased in the Expo. These services do not only take care of the elders’ health. They aim more to promote active aging, and keep the elderly in touch with the community. For example, Y Fitness improves elders’ health and well-being by providing different fitness courses and keeping them physically active; Y Evergreen encourages lifelong learning; and Y Garden View Lounge and Y Farm allow the elderly to showcase one’s talents and contribute to the society. Upholding our mission of life enhancement, and in facing imminent challenges arisen from rapid ageing, HKYWCA has been focusing on developing social enterprises to converge various types of social capitals. We will enhance the operational effectiveness of our current businesses and continue to explore new possibilities for the benefit of the society.
