Fung was diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder and hyperactivity disorder when he was six. He was so energetic and emotional that his mother Yoyo was once worried and frustrated, “I was always afraid that I could not keep him safe as he ran so fast. Therefore, we usually went to restaurants and the park near our home. I don’t want to stay out for too long.”

When Yoyo discovered a programme designed for children with special education needs (SEN) and would allow Fung, who loves reading, to be a librarian, she enrolled Fung in the programme despite the doubt about her son’s ability. She was astonished when she noticed Fung concentrated on his work in the quiet library and completed tasks like gluing labels onto the books and sorting newspaper and books accordingly. The programme made her understand that children with SEN can develop their talents as long as appropriate support is available.

The Association’s Y-SENse team worked on the stories of Fung and other SEN kids to publish the picture book “The Visible Secret”. It is expected to raise public awareness on this group of children. The three specially designed colour filters help readers to understand the problems, struggles and feelings of SEN children and their families, and how prejudice of the public hurts them.

HKYWCA is now raising funds for children with SEN by ChariTea Mid-Autumn Gift Box Set. Each set costs HK$300, and consists of tea bags in two flavours and the picture book “The Visible Secret”. The net revenue will go to the Association’s self-financed Y-SENse services to support and empower children in need. You are also welcome to donate the book to help families with SEN kids to overcome obstacles.
