Hang Seng Volunteer Team participated in an orienteering activity “Running Child” to increase primary school students’ knowledge of Hong Kong and improve their emotion management and social skills.

Volunteers met the students at school and played mini games to build team spirit. They then went out in groups and visited checkpoints at Tsim Sha Tsui Ferry Pier, Hong Kong Space Museum, Xiqu Centre etc. They had to finish different tasks, e.g. asking pedestrians for time in various languages, finding possible road and water transports in Hong Kong, taking photos with designated posture, etc., which helped them to make use of their common knowledge of Hong Kong and aroused their interest in learning. In order to let the participants to have a taste of money management, every group was also asked to allocate a fixed amount of money for transportation and meal.

Participants learned to work with others through the tasks and hence improved their interpersonal and communication skills. Challenges did arise and bring the children into conflict. However, with the help of social workers and volunteers, problems were resolved and the team learnt to respect each other and control one’s emotion. The participants had so much fun that they would like to join events like this again.

Thanks to Hang Seng Volunteer Team for spending such a meaningful day with the students. They showed endless love and wisdom in taking care of the children. They also provided guidance and encouragement so that the kids dare to express themselves.
