In view of the novel coronavirus disease, HKYWCA has launched a series of measures since January 28, to reduce social contacts between the Association’s service users and staff. Although some of the non-emergency services are disturbed under the special work arrangement, we do make good use of technology to help.

Schools will not resume classes before mid-March. To help young children understand the situation and the importance of personal hygiene, Y Joy Early Childhood School Social Work Service has produced a 40-page anti-epidemic booklet. There are 22 additional activities, suggested by social workers, that allow parents to play with their kids. The games are useful in building parent-child relationships, and easing the tensions between parents and children while they are trapped at home. Copies of the booklet have been delivered to our partner schools. It is also available online, together with the teaching aids designed by Y SENse.

The Association’s Care & Attention Homes for the Elderly have carried out stringent disease controls and preventive measures since the end of January. Staff is required to self isolate for 14 days after visiting Mainland China, conduct temperature monitoring before entering the premises, and wear masks at work. As visits have also been suspended, both elderly homes provide video chat service for those who miss their family members. 30 video calls have been arranged within a week in Cheng Pon Hing Care & Attention Home for the Elderly. “Families of our residents respect the suspension of visits, as they understand that the virus is highly infectious. Video call is a safer way to meet,” said unit-in-charge Sandie Ha.

Besides personal hygiene, regular exercise can also help to build up good body immunity. While people are encouraged to stay at home, Y Fitness demonstrates exercises fit for home setting with online videos. People can enhance muscle endurance, body balance, and stability with these sets of exercise. Live webcasts on Facebook allow people to interact with the trainers and inquire about exercise postures, breathing methods and typical body aches. The initiative is welcomed by the netizens.
